We are pleased to welcome you in Maastricht where the 8th Annual Meeting of EFFORTS Europe will take place from October 2-5, 2023. Maastricht is located in the uttermost south of the Netherlands and close to the borders of Belgium and Germany. It is the capital of the Province of Limburg.

Maastricht is also the centre of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, which makes it easily reachable from all major European cities, either by public or private transportation. In the past, Maastricht has gained a lot of experience in hosting international congresses and events.

Due to its interesting history, Maastricht is the perfect place to host an international conference on fortifications. Archaeological findings go back to the Palaeolithic period and from every following archaeological period, there are remains to be found. And when it comes to fortifications, Maastricht is like a sample card of military fortifications, dating back from the 13^th century up to the Cold War period. The city was besieged many times due to its strategical location on the river Meuse and every conqueror added some new fortifications to the existing ones.

The Old Town is located on the banks of the Meuse River and its historical centre is a favourite spot for shopping and having a drink in one of the many pubs. Maastricht does not only thrive on its history but also has a young and vivid university, with half of the students coming from abroad. It shows that Maastricht is truly a European city.

Because of its rich heritage on fortifications and because of its proximity to the border of Belgium, an attractive excursion program will complement the Annual Meeting.
