A tour of the fortifications in the north and west of the city
During this tour, we visit the outworks of the Low and High Fronts of the fortifications. The Low Fronts is the area where in 1816-1822 the last mayor modernization of the town defenses took place. It is also one of the hotspots where tensions rose between modern times, the rising industry and the limitations the fortifications imposed. We will see fortifications, canals, abandoned railroads and the remnants of the industry.
The differences between fortifications in low and in high terrain will be most visible when we reach bastion Holsteyn. The height difference is impressive and from here on we will walk through dry moats. Carel Diederik Du Moulin, a Dutch fortress engineer, realized a continuous line of defence in this area in the years 1773-1777. It is also the section of the fortifications prepared for underground warfare by means of an extensive system of mine galleries. The tour will also visit a part of this 11 kilometers long complex.
In the underground galleries, there is a constant temperature of 11°C. A pull or jacket is strongly recommended. We also recommend closed shoes.
